A most successful evening and a much enjoyed feast

Jackie was presented with a bouquet of lilies by Nigel to mark the end of her Horticultural Scholarship at Treborth and to thank her for all the excellent work (not least, organizing the Bring-a-dish) she has done there over the last eight months. Rob and Laura were also congratulated for their hugely valued efforts on a variety of projects at Treborth – both will be moving away to take up other pursuits.

Going Wild at Treborth

An exciting new development was started on Sunday 1st February when some Friends and a student work party turned the first sods on a New Pond and WildlifeArea at the Botanic Garden.

This area is designed to provide a safe environment for schoolchildren to come face to face with some bugs and beasties, flowers and plants and have some fun at Treborth.

Anna Williams (Snowdonia Wildlife Gardening Project Officer) has provided the inspiration and funding (through the Countryside Council for Wales) for this initiative and the Friends have embraced the idea and resolved to make it a reality.

The centrepiece of the wildlife area is a main pond with three dipping ponds on a small raised bank, a bog garden, wildflower bank and a woven willow hedge to protect the pond margins. Places for children to study or relax are included, as well as a butterfly border which seeks to show what can be done in a home garden setting to encourage wildlife by providing nectar and food throughout the seasons.

With the essential and wholehearted support of the students work started on the site on Feb 1st and real progress has already been made causing great excitement all around.

If you’d like to know more, the design is on display in the laboratory at Treborth, or send an e-mail to info@treborthbotanicgarden.org and we’ll try and answer any queries.
